Someone to hold your place at the passport office
The form is online and the payment is online. What is still a line of people at seven in the morning is the appointment itself. Send someone to stand in it and call you when you are close.
Pay on the official portal and nowhere else
Applications and payments go through the Nigeria Immigration Service portal, reached from immigration.gov.ng. Do not pay a person, a bank transfer or an agent outside it. Fees change and are quoted differently all over the internet, so read the current figure on the portal itself — we are not printing one here for you to act on weeks from now.
Fix your NIN before you start, not after
The passport portal pulls your details from the NIMC database using your NIN, so a name or date of birth that disagrees with your NIN record will stop the application. Correct the NIN first, through NIMC's self-service portal. This is the single most common way an application dies at the desk after the queue has already been stood in.
What to have with you at the appointment
Yours to bring, because you are the one being photographed.
- The printed application form and your proof of online payment.
- Your appointment slip from the portal.
- First application: a birth certificate from the National Population Commission — or, if you were born before December 1992, an age declaration sworn before a Commissioner for Oaths.
- Renewal: your current or most recently expired passport.
- A minor must be accompanied by a consenting parent.
Where a runner fits
They take the early place in the line, check in with a photo and a location so you can see the queue moving, and call you when you are near the front. You arrive for the capture. At the handover you read their 6-digit code into your phone and the fee is released from escrow.
Questions people ask
- Can someone apply for my Nigerian passport for me?
- No. The application is yours, the payment goes through the NIS portal in your name, and the biometric capture needs you in person. A runner can hold your place in the queue so you are not there from dawn — that is all, and anyone offering more is selling you a tout.
- How much is a Nigerian passport?
- Read it on the Nigeria Immigration Service portal. Fees have changed more than once and every unofficial figure online is a different number, so we deliberately do not print one. Pay through the portal and never to a person.
- Why does my passport application fail at the desk?
- Most often because the details on the portal disagree with your NIN record — the portal fills them from the NIMC database. Fix the NIN first through NIMC's self-service portal, then apply.
- Can a runner collect my passport when it is ready?
- Collection rules are set by the office and some require you in person. Post it as a collection errand and a runner will tell you what the office says before anything is funded — and if they cannot collect it, nothing has left your wallet.
- What if the queue takes all day?
- You set the fee knowing roughly what the wait is, and the runner decides whether it is worth their day. The app warns a runner when an errand has less time than it usually needs, so set the deadline honestly.
Where this can be run today
Runners are on the ground in Ibadan and Lagos. Everywhere else the board is open and empty, so an errand posted there waits for a first runner.
